Butterflies are well-known for their wings but this one is rather different. A dragontail butterfly’s main feature is the long tail that you do not find in other species in the family. 1Appearance

Dragontail butterfly comes in two colors: green and white; and both look absolutely gorgeous. The green dragontail has a black and green color while the white dragontail as a black and white color. Their antennae, head, and thorax are black while the abdomen is dark brownish black. This butterfly’s transparent wings are 4 to 5.5 centimeters while the large white-tipped tail is 2.5 to 4 centimeters. The large tails and wings make them have a whirring flight pattern which is super unique. Females lay smooth and nearly transparent green eggs, and a dragontail butterfly has a lifespan of up to 12 days only.

2Habitats

This swallowtail butterfly species lives in South Asia and Southeast Asia, living in various areas across their range. They frequent open sunlit patches near rivers, streams, and water courses, hanging out in small groups of two or three. At the same time, they also live in subtropical and tropical rainforests where they hang out on leaves near bushes.

3Life Stages

  • Caterpillar: The early life stage of a dragontail butterfly begins as a caterpillar with a vibrant dark green body with black spots. This coloration allows the caterpillar to camouflage among the foliage so that it is safe from predators.
  • Pupa: In the pupal stage, its chrysalis adheres to the upper surface of a leaf through its cremaster. This is a secure attachment to ensure its safety as it develops into a butterfly.
  • Butterfly: After around 4 weeks of the previous two stages, a beautiful adult dragontail butterfly emerges. An adult will find mates to reproduce before they die in the next 7 to 12 days.
